Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes @ Sadler’s Wells

Following many previous New Year visits to Sadler’s Wells for the now annual Matthew Bourne production, including Cinderella, Nutcracker!, Sleeping Beauty, Edward Scissorhands and most recently Swan Lake, the same New Adventures team returns with The Red Shoes.

Based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation is set to the achingly romantic music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann. Orchestrated by Terry Davies and played live by the New Adventures Orchestra, with cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Groothuis, Bourne’s hugely popular interpretation returns to London, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences across the UK and the USA.

A timeless fairytale and Academy Award-winning movie, The Red Shoes has captivated audiences and inspired generations of dancers with its powerful tale of obsession, possession and one girl’s dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

The Red Shoes is – “A feast for the eye. The Red Shoes will be dancing for years to come” THE OBSERVER, “Enthralling. Richly satisfying” THE GUARDIAN, “Shoes that fit beautifully. Blissful” DAILY TELEGRAPH.

You will notice below that it is a 2nd price seat that is included. This is because they don’t discount any of the other seats. We have our usual allocation in the stalls, directly behind the top price seats, which has served us very well on all our previous visits. For a change we are going on a Sunday giving us the bonus of not rushing for the coach after work (for those that do) or dealing with the rush hour traffic. We are also enjoying a matinee performance, which many have asked me to offer.

With the continued popularity and success of our trips to Sadler’s Wells for the Matthew Bourne productions, it is advisable to book early with most previous years ending with a waiting list.
