Dinner and Concert – The Mill at Sonning: Big Band Legends
June 1, 2025
With much of the original structure retained, this 18th Century Flour Mill has been converted into a renowned Dinner Theatre. Patrons enjoy a fresh home-cooked meal – with not a microwave in sight! – before watching the performance in the 215 seat air-conditioned auditorium.
Pre-dinner drinks with a view of The Thames or watching the working Waterwheel in the bar, is an added treat.
Founded in 1967 by trumpeter and arranger Syd Lawrence, the fabulous Syd Lawrence Orchestra has been thrilling audiences in concert halls, theatres, TV shows and music festivals all over Great Britain and Continental Europe for almost 60 years.
Renowned for its high octane mix of Big Band Swing and Classic Dance Music, the Orchestra’s repertoire ranges from the wartime million sellers of the legendary Glen Miller through the era of the great Count Basie Orchestra to hit songs from Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.
Count Basie himself described the Syd Lawrence Orchestra as ‘So good it should be BANNED!’.
The “Best Big Band in the Land” directed by Chris Dean brings the music of swing era back to life with the youthful verve that made it the smash hit pop music of its day. Presented with a mixture of fun, laughter, excitement and comedy it makes for a swinging and memorable evening.
Having won ‘UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre’ three years in a row, we are assured our usual first-class experience enjoying a home-cooked two course meal before the concert followed by tea or coffee.
