Highclere Castle

April 14, 2025

Highclere Castle is always a popular trip, and with our original trip in August already full, 2025 has proved no different. Under normal circumstances Highclere only allow one visit per group per year. I am pleased to be able to announce however, that we have secured an additional visit this April. If you thought you had missed out this year, hopefully you can join us on this second opportunity to visit to one of England’s most beautiful Victorian castles set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular parkland.

Highclere has of course become a hugely popular attraction after being used as the film set for Downton Abbey, the phenomenally successful TV drama series and two films.

Discover the fascinating history of the Castle, including its role as hospital to soldiers returning from the Somme in 1914. The Castle was also the seat of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who famously discovered the Tomb of the Egyptian boy Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, in 1922 with his archaeological colleague Howard Carter. Today, Highclere houses an Egyptian Exhibition throughout the cellars of the Castle to celebrate the 5th Earl’s achievements.

With our entry to Highclere being 10am, once we arrive, we will have around 4 hours of free time to enjoy all it has to offer. We can tour the Castle, Gardens and Egyptian Exhibition at our own pace. There are Tea Rooms with options for lunch and a Gift Shop. We will re-join the coach at 2.30pm to start our journey home. Hoping to beat the worst of any rush hour traffic, we would expect to be back in Dorking at a very sensible 4.30pm.
