Dinner and Theatre The Mill at Sonning
June 23, 2022
With much of the original structure retained, this 18th Century Flour Mill has been converted into a renowned Dinner Theatre. Patrons enjoy a fresh home-cooked meal – with not a microwave in sight! – before watching the performance in the 215 seat air-conditioned auditorium. Pre-dinner drinks with a view of The Thames or watching the working Waterwheel in the bar, is an added treat.
The Mill at Sonning are lucky enough once again to be able to call upon Brian Blessed to direct a play for them. Having previously directed Agatha Christie plays, on this occasion Brian turns his hand to her equal in crime novelists – Dorothy L Sayers.
Lord Peter Wimsey – upper crust sleuth – has married his lovely fiancee, Harriet Vane. But his honeymoon bliss is shattered when the dead body of the house’s previous owner turns up in the cellar. A brilliant whodunnit filled with thrills and humour!
This is what Brian has to say about the play:
Dorothy L Sayers is one of the greatest writers of The Golden Age of British crime fiction. This is her masterpiece! A love story with detective interruptions. It is enriched with gorgeous characters that bring delightful humour to the story. And the murder method itself remains the most ingenious ever devised by any crime writer.
High praise indeed! But don’t take Brian’s word for it, join us for what is always a wonderful afternoon and evening out.
A few years ago for our Summer trip to Sonning, in an attempt to avoid heavy traffic, we started leaving earlier taking in the beautiful town of Henley-on-Thames en-route. Having proved popular ever since, we will do the same again in June. Just under 30 minutes from Sonning, we will travel to Henley and have a stop-off for between 1-2 hours, traffic depending of course, before leaving in plenty of time to enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the theatre’s Waterwheel bar if we so wish. This is followed by a leisurely two course dinner which precedes the evening performance. Perfect!!
